The story
The story behind Morton's begins not with a perfectly seared ribeye, but with a hamburger. Co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch first crossed paths at the Playboy Club in Montreal, where Klaus cooked a burger that stopped Arnie in his tracks. He burst into the kitchen demanding to know who made it — and when Klaus stepped forward, Arnie declared it the best he'd ever tasted. They called it the "Million-Dollar Hamburger," and the partnership it sparked led to the first Morton's opening on State Street in Chicago in 1978.
More than four decades later, that founding philosophy — quality, consistency, genuine hospitality — still drives every location, including the North Miami Beach steakhouse on Biscayne Boulevard.
Morton's sources USDA Prime-aged beef from the same suppliers it has used since day one. That beef represents the top 2% of beef available in the United States, and if it doesn't meet Morton's internal standards, it doesn't get cut. The commitment is straightforward and the claim is direct: "The Best Steak...Anywhere."
The menu extends well beyond the steakhouse staples, though. Chilean Sea Bass, Oysters on the Half Shell, Colossal Shrimp, and Red King Crab Legs sit alongside the prime cuts, and the kitchen regularly introduces seasonal dishes — recent additions have included a Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, Oysters Rockefeller, and a Lobster & Crab Cocktail.
The North Miami Beach location holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects a list of more than 300 wines spanning rare cult classics, sommelier-curated by-the-glass pours, and exclusive seasonal Bottle Shock features. Morton's has also launched its own private label, "State & Rush," honoring the Chicago address where it all began — a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir sourced from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California. An on-site Wine Locker program is available for guests who want to store their own bottles between visits.
The atmosphere blends classic and contemporary: a bustling bar scene anchored by hand-crafted cocktails and the Bar 12-21 program, alongside elegant dining rooms suited to everything from a business dinner to a special celebration. Private dining rooms accommodate events of all sizes, and Morton's partners with athletes and their foundations for charitable evenings, wine dinners, and exclusive one-of-a-kind menus. Catering and takeaway options round out what is, at its core, a steakhouse that treats every guest like a VIP — whether they're at the bar or in a private room.
