The story
Perched above the village of Jackson, New Hampshire, with the Presidential Mountain Range as its backdrop, Forty is the fine-dining restaurant of The Inn at Thorn Hill — a property whose story stretches back to the late 1800s. The inn was originally part of a larger estate commissioned by Katherine Wormley, a Civil War nurse, author, and philanthropist of remarkable range. The residence itself was designed by Stanford White, one of the most celebrated architects in American history. That legacy of considered elegance still shapes everything about the place.
Forty draws on locally sourced ingredients to offer American and Italian cuisine in an atmosphere that feels both refined and genuinely warm. The Wine Cellar and the Granite Room — the inn's most intimate dining spaces — are available for reservations, and both can be reserved for private celebrations, elopements, and special gatherings. A seasonal enclosed porch extends the dining experience outdoors, with heaters keeping things comfortable as guests take in the mountain scenery.
The bar is stocked with premium spirits, fine wines, and craft beers, with knowledgeable staff on hand to guide choices. At its heart, though, is the wine program: an extensive collection of domestic and international bottles earned Forty the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023 — recognition that reflects the depth and curation of a cellar built for genuine wine lovers.
Special events at Forty offer a window into the kitchen's ambitions. A recent four-course wine dinner, priced at $150 per guest, brought together a thoughtfully crafted menu with expert pairings curated by Charlie Masters, owner of Le Charmel, Tiamo, and Tortoise Wines. That kind of programming — intimate, specific, rooted in craft — captures what Forty does best: American and Italian fine dining elevated by serious wine stewardship, in a setting that has been welcoming guests for over ninety years.
