The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Pencil Sketch That Became a Suffolk Institution

It all started with a pencil sketch on a plain paper napkin. That founding spirit — unpretentious, genuine, rooted in place — still defines Vintage Tavern two decades on. A staple of the North Suffolk community since 2003, the restaurant has built its reputation on what it calls "Seasonally Southern" American cuisine: dishes drawn from the food history and culture of Hampton Roads, prepared with locally sourced, in-season ingredients and served without pretension.

The People Behind the Kitchen

In May 2024, brothers Randy and Brian Pack — who grew up working at their family's Smithfield Station — acquired Vintage Tavern as part of their growing Pack Brothers Hospitality group. Joining them as managing partner is Ken Dodd, widely regarded as a master of his craft and a longtime fixture of the Vintage Tavern team. Together, they oversee a chef-driven kitchen committed to what they describe simply as: build a better plate every day.

Behind the bar, Chandler Lacerte, Vintage Tavern's Bar Manager, was named Bartender of the Year at the 2024 Ordinary Awards, hosted by the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association — a reflection of the same standard of excellence that runs through every corner of the restaurant.

What's on the Plate and in the Glass

The exhibition kitchen turns out signature Southern American dishes built on produce from a tight network of local farms and purveyors: Lilly Farm in Chesapeake, Cross Country Farm in Zuni, Johnson and Sons Seafood in Suffolk, Mushrooms by Jenny in Sedley, Windhaven Farms in Windsor, and Ashley Farms across the border in North Carolina. The "Taste of Southern Goodness" sampler — homemade biscuits, house-made sausages, shaved Virginia ham, deviled eggs, and seasonal spreads like strawberry jam — gives a clear sense of the kitchen's priorities. Seasonal entrées such as oven-baked flounder with herb-onion spoon bread and lemon brown butter sauce show the same local-first instinct. For something further afield, the menu also ventures into game, with elk chops and bison among the rotating selections.

The wine program earned Vintage Tavern a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 2025 — recognition well supported by a list exceeding 400 selections, complemented by craft beers and Guinness on tap.

The Space Itself

A recent remodel expanded the bar area and added dining options, but the bones of the room remain warmly characterful: exposed beams, Rumford fireplaces in each dining room, a dramatic open kitchen, game trophies in the lounge, and walls hung with original works by artists including Mark Bannerman and Thomas Mangelsen. Outside, a veranda and fire pit extend the dining experience into the open air. Private dining is available for special occasions, and the restaurant has earned multiple OpenTable Diners' Choice recognitions, including Top American Restaurant and Notable Wine List — consistent proof that this is a place locals return to, not just visit once.
