The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Coastal Virginia's Premier Chophouse

Since opening in 2008, River Stone Chophouse has been the standard-bearer for fine American dining in the Harbour View area of northern Suffolk. The restaurant draws discerning guests from across Coastal Virginia, the Hampton Roads peninsula, and northeastern North Carolina — all seeking what the kitchen does better than anyone else in the region: age Hereford beef in-house and cut every steak to order. That commitment to craft earned the restaurant a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects both the depth of the wine program and the kitchen's ambition.

The Steaks, the Seafood, the Raw Bar

River Stone is the only restaurant in the area aging its own Hereford beef, and the flagship of that program is a 22 oz. Dry Aged Ribeye, rested in-house for a full 28 days. Alongside it, the menu leans confidently into American seafood: Live Maine Lobsters, a rotating selection of oysters, and a Deviled Crab Dip that has become a signature in its own right. Seasonal salads and sides round out the table, while the separate bar menu offers more casual fare — a half-pound burger, House Cut Fries, and a Philly Steak Spring Roll — making the lounge a destination on its own terms.

The Space

The Arts and Crafts-inspired interior sets a deliberate mood: a stone fireplace, romantic booths, dramatic lighting, and an oyster and raw bar at the center of it all. Outside, a stone patio with a fire pit provides a quieter setting for an after-dinner cocktail or a fine cigar. Upstairs, four private rooms — the Robie, Wright, Taliesin, and Oak Park rooms — come equipped with full audio-visual capability for meetings and private events. The wine program, recognized by Wine Spectator, pairs naturally with a calendar of curated wine dinners that have featured producers from Santa Barbara County to Napa Valley.

Pack Brothers Hospitality

River Stone is part of the Pack Brothers Hospitality portfolio, led by Randy and Brian Pack — a family rooted in Virginia hospitality since childhood. The brothers acquired the chophouse in May 2024, bringing operational partner Ken Dodd on board and folding the restaurant into a group whose mission is, simply put, to build a better plate every day. OpenTable diners have consistently recognized River Stone for its ambience, service, romantic atmosphere, and notable wine list — a reputation that the current ownership is committed to sustaining and deepening.
