The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Corner of Piedmont in SoHo

Established in 2016 on Thompson Street in the heart of SoHo, San Carlo Osteria Piemonte was born from a genuine attachment to Northern Italy's most storied region. Owner Carlo Rolle — a Turin native with over two decades of business experience across Italy, Germany, and Korea — brought the traditions of Piedmontese cuisine to New York with the same seriousness he applied to his restaurants back home. The result is a neighborhood restaurant with a warm, rustic-yet-modern setting that earns its Gambero Rosso recognition without straining for it.

The People Behind the Plates

In the kitchen, Executive Chef Davide Iacoboni anchors the menu in regional authenticity, working with handmade pastas, Fassona beef, and time-honored recipes that balance tradition with careful refinement. Front-of-house is shared between Mirko Mennuni, who oversees the beverage program with deep knowledge of Italian wines and cocktails, and Mauro Cerrina, whose hospitality background ensures service remains attentive and personal. Together they set a tone that feels distinctly Piedmontese — generous without being showy.

What's on the Table

The menu reads like a considered tour of the region. Agnolotti del plin — the pinched pasta that is a Piedmontese signature — arrive filled with braised meat and finished in a demi-glace and butter-sage sauce. Tajarin, the region's famously thin egg pasta, appears in a black squid-ink version with Cetara anchovies and Ferrarini butter. Fassona beef, prized for its lean texture, features in a hand-cut tartare with hazelnuts and bagnetto rosso, and again as a slow-braised beef cheek with a Barolo reduction. The Vitello Tonnato and Tonnato di Coniglio — slow-cooked rabbit marinated in oil and herbs, served cold with housemade giardiniera — round out the antipasti as quiet classics of Piedmontese cooking.

Barolo, Amaro, and Sunday Music

Beverage Director Mirko Mennuni has assembled more than 250 wine labels, with particular depth in Barolo and Barbaresco. The cocktail program leans into the Italian aperitivo tradition, and the digestif collection — spanning amaro and grappa — is among the more serious in the neighborhood. On Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 PM, live music fills the room, adding an unhurried, convivial rhythm to the weekend.

San Carlo also accommodates private events and offers outdoor seating, making it as suited to a celebratory dinner as to a long, relaxed lunch in SoHo.
