Portale Restaurant

Chef Alfred Portale's contemporary Italian restaurant in a Chelsea carriage house, honored with Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Chef's Heritage, Brought to Chelsea

At Portale Restaurant on West 18th Street, Executive Chef and Owner Alfred Portale channels his passion for Italy into a contemporary Italian menu that draws from the country's many regions and its deeply seasonally driven approach to cooking. The restaurant occupies a renovated carriage house in the heart of Chelsea, a setting that feels both metropolitan and unhurried — its interior designed by INC Architecture & Design, where raw materials meet refined finishes to produce what the restaurant describes as "a sleek metropolitan feel with homespun comfort."

Chef de Cuisine Jacinto Guadarrama works alongside Portale to execute a kitchen philosophy that is, in the restaurant's own words, "thoughtful but never too fussy." That ethos shapes everything from the antipasti to the dolci.

What's on the Plate

The contemporary Italian menu moves confidently across Italy's pantry. Antipasti range from a burrata paired with prosciutto di Parma, strawberries, and poached rhubarb to a yellowfin tuna crudo with Calabrian chili and citrus emulsion, and grilled octopus with confit sungold tomatoes and smoked paprika aioli. The pasta section — a centerpiece of any Italian kitchen — includes agnolotti filled with sheep's milk ricotta and wild mushrooms in a double chicken brodo, bucatini with Manila clams and guanciale, and lumache with bolognese bianco and black truffle.

Secondi lean on quality sourcing: Faroe Islands salmon, Maine lobster in a mafaldine with lemon-basil butter, and a roasted duck breast with wild rice, farro, and champagne mango. Desserts close the meal with an olive oil cake, ricotta cannoli, and warm bombolini with chocolate and caramel dipping sauce.

Wine at the Center

The wine program is a genuine pillar of the Portale experience — recognized with Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, a distinction that reflects both depth of list and the care taken in pairing. Wine Director Michael Dolinski has built a program serious enough to anchor a recurring series of wine dinners that have featured producers from Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Mount Etna, and Valtellina, with winemakers often joining in person. These sold-out evenings, held in the restaurant's private Etna Room, speak to a community that comes to Portale not just to eat but to engage with Italian wine and food as a connected whole.

The Setting and the Spirit

The carriage house location gives Portale a sense of occasion without formality. The restaurant serves lunch, brunch, and dinner across the week, with a weekday happy hour exclusively at the bar. Private events, catering, and delivery extend its reach beyond the dining room. The mission, simply put, is to be a place worth returning to — for any occasion, in any season.
