The story
On Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West Side, Lucciola operates with a clear conviction: every element of a meal — the lighting, the acoustics, the provenance of an ingredient — should be intentional and emotionally resonant. The result is one of the most seriously considered Italian fine dining rooms in New York City, recognized by Wine Spectator with its Best of Award of Excellence and praised by Forbes, La Repubblica, and Identità Golose as the most authentic expression of Italian cooking in the city.
At the center of Lucciola is Executive Chef Michele Casadei Massari, whose cooking is rooted in his Italian heritage — specifically the rich, ingredient-driven traditions of Emilia-Romagna — and expanded by a philosophy he describes as cooking "without borders." Each dish on the menu arrives with chef's notes, offering a window into the precision and personal history behind it. Insidehook singled out his passatelli as a favorite new pasta; Forbes wrote that Lucciola "uniquely serves the rich cooking of Bologna, based on extraordinary ingredients."
Lucciola's most distinctive offering is The Giusti Experience — NYC's first tasting menu entirely dedicated to Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. In collaboration with Acetaia Giusti, founded in 1605 and the world's oldest producer of the condiment, the restaurant has recreated a Modenese acetaia atmosphere through a custom-designed Giusti Corner, complete with historic casks and handcrafted elements. Just six seats are available for the six-course menu, where each dish by Chef Michele is paired with a different Giusti balsamic aged from 8 to over 100 years — including the rare Riserva Privata drawn from the chef's own personal barrels in Modena. Every detail, from barrel-wood chargers to custom ceramic tasting spoons, reflects four centuries of tradition.
The Wine Spectator recognition is no accident. Lucciola's cellar holds over 1,450 meticulously selected Italian and international wines, and the sommelier team is dedicated to pairing them thoughtfully with the Italian Mediterranean menu. Beyond the dining room, the Lucciola Wine Club hosts intimate producer dinners — from Barolo estates to Alto Adige single-vineyard specialists — bringing winemakers directly to the table for conversations that are as much about storytelling as tasting.
The dress code is "casual elegant" — jackets recommended, a certain attentiveness expected. The space is designed for presence and intimacy: warm lighting, thoughtful acoustics, minimalist design. A private dining room accommodates special occasions, with staff collaborating on custom menus and ambiance. Walk-ins are welcome on weekdays for the full dining experience, though reservations are strongly advised given the limited seating.
