The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

An Intimate Bistro That Became a New York Classic

Since opening in 2013, Estela has earned a place among the most celebrated restaurants in the United States — a distinction built not on spectacle but on consistency, creativity, and a rare ability to feel right for almost any occasion. Chef Ignacio Mattos's downtown bistro on East Houston Street holds one Michelin star and, most recently, Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence for 2025, recognition that reflects the seriousness of its wine program alongside the kitchen's ambitions.

The Kitchen and the Room

The cooking at Estela sits at the intersection of American and Mediterranean sensibilities — a combination that gives the menu both the directness of seasonal American cooking and the brightness of Mediterranean technique. Chef de Cuisine Timothy Tubbs leads the kitchen day to day, while General Manager Ariel Hernandez oversees a floor that manages the difficult trick of feeling bustling and intimate at the same time.

The space itself has become part of the restaurant's identity. Guests come for a thrilling dinner in the dining room, a leisurely weekend brunch, or simply a late-night drink at the bar — and each experience holds up on its own terms. That flexibility is unusual at this level of cooking, and it's a large part of why Estela has remained a fixture in the city's dining conversation for well over a decade.

Signature Dishes and Something New

Several dishes that originated at Estela are now considered New York City classics in their own right — a testament to how deeply the restaurant's American-Mediterranean cooking has shaped the way the city eats. At the same time, the menu is never static; returning guests consistently find something new alongside the familiar. That balance between comfort and discovery is difficult to sustain, and Estela sustains it.

The wine list, recognized by Wine Spectator with its Best of Award of Excellence, is thoughtfully assembled and broad enough to reward exploration without overwhelming.
