The story
Crown Shy occupies the ground floor of the Art Deco landmark at 70 Pine Street in Manhattan's Financial District — a setting that frames the experience before a single dish arrives. Opened in 2019, the restaurant earned a Michelin star just six months after its debut and has held it every year since. Wine Spectator recognized the program further with its Best of Award of Excellence in 2022, a testament to the depth and care behind the bottle list.
The restaurant describes itself plainly and accurately: "a neighborhood restaurant elevated by fine dining cooking technique and purposeful friendly service." That balance — rigorous craft without stiffness — is the through line.
Executive Chef Jassimran Singh leads a kitchen where the food is rooted in European technique but draws inspiration from around the world, specifically from childhood flavors, travel, and the diversity of New York City itself. The result is a contemporary American menu that moves confidently across borders without losing focus.
At lunch, dishes like Rigatoni with Spring Butter, Guanciale, and Confit Yolk sit alongside a Pork Katsu Sandwich with Curry Béarnaise, and Chicken Kofta with Rice Pilaf and Ras-Al-Hanout. Dinner expands the range further: Jerk Octopus with Stewed Beans and Yams, Scallop with Blood Orange and Jalapeño Kosho, Beef Kibbeh Nayeh with Lavash and Labneh, and a Roasted Short Rib with Aji Verde and Crispy Potato that anchors the menu. Pastry rounds things out with desserts like Mango Tres Leches with Passion Curd and a Sticky Toffee Pudding for Two.
The cocktail list is equally considered — original builds like the Calabash (tequila, coconut, passion fruit, caramelized sherry) or the Fico Fico (bourbon, cognac, fig leaf amaro, walnut) show a bar program thinking in the same register as the kitchen.
Crown Shy has added a live music dimension through its "Kitchen Selects" series. Grammy-winning producer Easy Mo Bee — the architect behind records for The Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, and Alicia Keys — was the inaugural DJ to spin live at the restaurant. His selections now serve as the dining room's ongoing soundtrack, giving the space an energy that's distinctly New York without being performative.
For private events, the restaurant offers dedicated dining options managed by Special Events Director Leigh-Erin Balmer, making it a considered choice for gatherings that demand both atmosphere and substance.
