The story
Benoit New York occupies a particular place in Midtown Manhattan — a contemporary French bistro that carries the weight of a storied name while feeling entirely at home between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, steps from MoMA and Rockefeller Center. In August 2016, Alain Ducasse transformed the original Benoit into a more modern 21st-century dining destination, keeping the signature red velvet banquettes that anchor the room in classic bistro tradition while introducing a lighter color palette and a dedicated Wine Bar. As Ducasse himself puts it: "Benoit is all about conviviality, memories, and a shared pleasure around the table."
At the stove is Executive Chef Lucile Plaza, whose story is inseparable from the restaurant's current identity. Raised in the suburbs of East Paris and shaped by a dual French-Spanish heritage, she trained at École Hôtelière de Paris – CFA Médéric before cutting her teeth in Michelin-starred kitchens in Paris. She first joined Benoit New York in 2014, later led the culinary program at Le Coq Rico — where critics singled out her poultry dishes as among the finest in the United States — then returned to the Alain Ducasse family at Benoit in 2020. Working alongside Ducasse, Plaza crafts a menu rooted in the great traditions of French cuisine but responsive to the seasons: onion soup, pâté en croûte, baba au rhum, and seasonal preparations like veal sweetbreads sit alongside inventive twists on familiar flavors. New York Magazine, Forbes, and Wine Spectator have all taken notice of her elegant, comforting approach.
Wine is genuinely central here, not incidental. The list spans more than 900 references — iconic French producers alongside domestic selections, with particular attention to East Coast wines. The Wine Bar runs its own rhythm: more spontaneous and lively than the dining room, yet preserving the spirit of a true Parisian bistro. A team of sommeliers leads weekly and monthly programming, and a rotation of wines served through a Coravin device ensures quality at every pour. That commitment earned Benoit the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence — a recognition that reflects the seriousness and breadth of the beverage program.
Beyond the main dining room and Wine Bar, Benoit offers exquisitely designed private dining salons for business dinners, celebrations, and special gatherings — each event shaped around the guest's needs. The French bistro experience here is one of precision and warmth in equal measure, a place where tradition and a modern sensibility share the same table without friction.
