Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca

Since 1998, Babbo has redefined Italian fine dining in NYC's Greenwich Village with bold regional flavors, unexpected ingredients, and a classic rock soundtrack.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Greenwich Village Institution, Reimagined

Since 1998, Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca has occupied a historic carriage house on Waverly Place in Greenwich Village, earning its place as one of New York City's most enduring Italian restaurants. The candlelit dining room, with its intimate atmosphere and classic rock backdrop, has long set Babbo apart from the city's more formal fine-dining establishments. Now, under Executive Chef Mark Ladner, the restaurant enters a new chapter — one that honors its original spirit while introducing playful tableside presentations and a renewed sense of hospitality.

Italian Cooking with Conviction

The menu is rooted in bold regional Italian flavors, but Babbo has never been content with the predictable. Unexpected ingredients and precise technique define dishes across every course. Among the primi, the Beef Cheek Ravioli — finished with crushed chicken liver and black truffle butter — has become a signature, as has the Goat Cheese Tortelloni with dried citrus, bee pollen, and fennel pollen. The Black Spaghetti arrives with rock shrimp, spicy Calabrian sausage, and green chilies; the Cavatelli pairs rabbit ragù with porcini and piquillo peppers. Crudi are presented in Venetian glass, with options ranging from fluke with tomato raisins and Sicilian extra-virgin olive oil to caper-cured trout with stracchino and dill.

Secondi draw from carefully sourced producers — dry-aged pork from Snake River Farms, lamb from the Rocky Mountains, a 35-day dry-aged porterhouse Bistecca alla Fiorentina for two. The tasting menu, priced at $95 per person with an optional wine pairing, offers a structured path through the kitchen's current thinking, closing with a dessert that the menu simply describes as "a surprise."

Recognition and the Wine List

Wine Spectator has recognized Babbo with its Best of Award of Excellence, a fitting honor for a restaurant whose enoteca identity is woven into its name. The wine program complements a cocktail list that leans into Italian aperitivo culture — the Waverly Spritz, the Negroni Classico, and the house Manhattan among the highlights — alongside a thoughtful selection of non-alcoholic options.

Babbo remains, after more than two decades, a benchmark for Italian cooking in New York City: specific in its sourcing, confident in its flavors, and genuinely pleasurable in its atmosphere.
