The story
Barcelona Wine Bar on Villa Place brings a genuine slice of Spanish dining culture to Nashville — the kind of casual, convivial atmosphere you'd find in the food stalls of Barcelona's Boqueria Market or Valencia's Central Market, transplanted intact to Tennessee. The concept was born in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1996, when partners Andy Pforzheimer and Sasa Mahr-Batuz opened what became one of the first authentic Spanish restaurants in the United States. Nashville is one of more than two dozen locations that have grown from that original vision, each sharing the same name and culture while remaining chef-driven — every Executive Chef writes their own menu daily.
The kitchen's philosophy is straightforward and uncompromising: tapas both simple and elegant, built from the finest seasonal picks sourced from local markets, alongside unusual specialties from Spain and the Mediterranean. The cuisine is clean and rustic, shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. Bold flavors, market-fresh ingredients, and careful preparation do the talking — no elaboration needed.
The wine list is the other reason to come, and it is genuinely exceptional. Barcelona Wine Bar operates one of the largest Spanish wine programs in the United States, with approximately 500 selections spanning more than 100 regions. Around 40 wines are available by the glass — offered in both 3 oz and 6 oz pours, with the option to build custom flight combinations — and 75% of the list is Old World, with Spain alone accounting for half of all selections. There is also a serious commitment to sustainable, organic, biodynamic, and natural winemaking, and notably, half the bottles on the list are priced under $50.
That program earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence — the publication's highest tier — a recognition the Nashville location carries as part of the wider Barcelona family. The wine team is led by Gretchen Thomas, VP of Food & Beverage Innovations and a certified Spanish Wine Educator who ranked in the top 15 in the world through the Wine Academy of Spain, and Beverage Director Emily Nevin-Giannini, a Certified Sherry Wine Specialist who travels extensively to source from small producers using the highest-quality methods. The result is a list that chases patience, craft, and a genuine love of the land over brands or trends.
Barcelona Wine Bar does not ask you to treat dinner as an occasion. The whole point is that casual dining need not be a mediocre experience. Come for a glass of Sherry and a few tapas, or settle in for a longer evening working through the Spanish wine list. Either way, the energy is the thing — warm, unpretentious, and rooted in a real affection for the food and wine culture of the Iberian Peninsula.
