The story
Compline Restaurant was founded in 2017 by veteran sommeliers Matt Stamp and Ryan Stetins, and the name itself tells you everything about the philosophy. "Compline" refers to the final hour of the monastic day — a quiet nod to the monks who tended vines across Europe and along the California coast long before Napa became Napa. Today, the restaurant sits in the heart of downtown Napa, right behind the Archer Hotel, and functions as a genuine gathering place for locals, valley visitors, and anyone serious about wine.
The menu is the work of Culinary Director Sean Massey, with a kitchen rooted firmly in Californian cuisine — meaning the best ingredients wine country has to offer, treated with care and without pretense. The approach has earned Compline consistent recognition from the San Francisco Chronicle, which has named it among the top Napa Valley restaurants, and from Eater, which lists it among the 18 best destination restaurants in the valley. The New York Times' Eric Asimov described Compline as "immediately a destination for wine lovers," singling out its wine list as uniquely comprehensive in a region where most lists skew toward trophy bottles or a single country.
That wine list is no small thing. It earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence in 2019 and has since been named Best Wine List in North America by the World of Fine Wine Awards in both 2024 and 2025 — a distinction that sets Compline apart not just in Napa but across the continent.
Compline also makes room for culinary creativity beyond its California foundation. A recent residency brought Chef Diego Isunza Kahlo — great-great nephew of artist Frida Kahlo — from Mexico City, drawing on Mexican, Mediterranean, and Californian traditions to offer a broadened perspective on the menu. Alongside the dining experience, original works by his mother, photographer and artist Cristina Kahlo, were exhibited throughout the restaurant — a reminder that Compline treats the table as a place for culture as much as for food and wine.
The restaurant also operates a neighboring wine shop, making it a full destination for anyone who wants to take a piece of the experience home.
