The story
Marking its 50th year as Nantucket's most celebrated special occasion restaurant, The Company of the Cauldron operates on a simple but demanding premise: every evening is a dinner party, and every guest is a friend not yet met. The small red building on India Street, its windows framed in ivy, opens into a candlelit room that Frommer's once called "a longtime contender for the honor of most romantic restaurant on Nantucket." The open kitchen is visible from the dining room, and that transparency is entirely intentional.
At the center of everything is Michelin-starred Chef Joseph Keller, whose biography reads like a map of American fine dining's defining moments. He first stepped into a professional kitchen at twelve, filling in for a cook at his mother's restaurant in Maryland. By sixteen he was training under Gustanzo Pucillo at the acclaimed Petite Marmite in Palm Beach. He fell in love with Nantucket early in his career, working as sous chef at the Club Car and later as chef at Cliffside Beach Club and the Woodbox Inn. After further training in France, he joined his brother Thomas in 1994 to transform The French Laundry in Yountville into what many food writers have called America's greatest restaurant — a collaboration that also produced Bouchon in Napa. Now back on the island after a twenty-two-year absence, Keller comes out of the kitchen each night to meet every guest personally. As he puts it: "Food isn't just about mechanics — it's about a feeling, wanting to give someone something."
The menu changes nightly — no two evenings are the same. The prix fixe format anchors the experience, built on French technique, sustainable sourcing, and farm-to-table ingredients drawn from the best available that day. The kitchen's approach is described as American cuisine with French nuances: classic foundations elevated without pretension, comfort food treated with the rigor of fine dining. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, earned in 2023, reflects the same seriousness applied to the cellar.
For something more private, the Chef's Table on the outdoor patio — open-air, under the stars — is available on request. The long-tenured staff handles every detail quietly and knowledgeably, leaving guests free to focus on the company around them.
