The story
The Pocket describes itself simply: when you find that perfect combination of people, ambience, food and drink, you're in The Pocket. It's a philosophy rooted in a lifetime of watching parents work hard to create beautiful experiences for guests — and it shows in every corner of this Carmel-by-the-Sea address on Lincoln Street.
The restaurant earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence in 2024, a recognition that reflects just how seriously the wine program is taken here. Regular wine dinners — past collaborators have included Holman Ranch, DAOU, Jarvis Estate, Talbott Vineyards, and Penfolds — bring winemakers and guests together for multi-course evenings where each pour is chosen to complement Chef Mike Fischetti's menus. These are not casual add-ons; they are the beating heart of what The Pocket does.
Executive Chef Mike Fischetti brings a résumé that spans both coasts. A 2006 graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, he built his reputation through stints that earned AAA 5-Star recognition, back-to-back wins at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival, and a showcase at the James Beard House. He was named Certified Angus Beef Chef of the Year in 2022. His Californian cuisine draws on a deep fluency with ingredients and an instinct for bold, considered pairings.
Alongside him, Pastry Chef Asha Johnston brings a distinctly local perspective — born and raised in Carmel, trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park and certificated at Le Cordon Bleu in London. Her desserts aim for what she calls "cozy quality," made with the best available ingredients.
The Pocket extends beyond the dining room. A courtyard anchors the property, and directly behind it sits Inn The Pocket — a luxury apartment hotel offering the intimacy of a private residence with five-star amenities, accommodating up to ten adults across three connected floors. The restaurant is steps away for dining out or private in-residence service.
For those who want to go deeper into Californian cuisine, Chef Mike hosts private cooking classes for groups of up to nine, covering three courses with food and drinks included — a hands-on counterpart to the wine dinner calendar.
Happy hour runs daily from 3:30 to 5:00 pm, making The Pocket as welcoming for a spontaneous early evening drink as it is for a planned special occasion.
