The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Where the Pacific Sets the Table

Perched at 400 Cannery Row with Monterey Bay filling every window, Coastal Kitchen earns its Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating not on spectacle alone — though the view at sunset is genuinely hard to ignore. The restaurant's deeper pull is the cooking of Executive Chef Michael Rotondo, whose ever-changing tasting menus treat the Central California coast as both pantry and muse. The kitchen sources 98 percent of its ingredients from within a 100-mile radius, a commitment that keeps the menu honest and the flavors unmistakably of this place.

Chef Michael Rotondo and Sommelier Conrad Reddick

Rotondo's approach has been described by Monterey County Weekly as building courses like "movements flowing from a vegetable treat to a genteel appetizer, fish and pasta toward Wagyu beef" — each one equally captivating rather than building toward a single peak. He has a documented gift, in the words of one press piece, for "taking something familiar and giving it new dimensions." Black cod is a recurring anchor on the menu: a spring version arrives wood-roasted alongside smoked-paprika-spiced yam and chorizo, the flavors of fire meeting the cold Pacific. A 48-hour braised beef short rib has also appeared as a centerpiece course.

Completing the table is Sommelier Conrad Reddick, whose wine program earned Coastal Kitchen a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. Reddick knows the menu intimately and steers guests toward pairings that feel inevitable rather than prescribed — an asset that elevates an already strong farm-to-table experience into something more considered.

The Menus

Dinner runs Tuesday through Saturday and offers two paths. The Choice Menu ($95 per person) gives guests flexibility with à la carte beverage options. The Chef's Selection Menu ($155 per person) is the full tasting format, with optional sommelier-curated wine pairings. Every service opens with a three-part amuse-bouche. On Sundays, a three-course prix fixe brunch ($75 per person) arrives with free-flowing sparkling wine and the option to add a seafood tower.

Guest after guest singles out the same qualities: impeccable plating, flavors that feel both surprising and grounded, and service that handles dietary restrictions with genuine care. "Each course is delivered with impeccable detail," wrote one diner. Another called it "an artful exploration of local ingredients and a playful homage to the seasons" — which is about as accurate a summary as any.
