Bartolotta's Lake Park Bistro

Milwaukee's premier French restaurant since 1995, set in a park pavilion above Lake Michigan with a Wine Spectator-awarded all-French wine list.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Since 1995, Bartolotta's Lake Park Bistro has occupied a historic park pavilion on the shores of Lake Michigan, earning its place as Milwaukee's most enduring destination for French cuisine. The setting alone — a graceful pavilion with lake views — gives the room a particular calm, but what keeps guests returning is a kitchen and cellar that have quietly accumulated serious recognition over three decades.

A Kitchen Rooted in French Tradition

The menu is described by the restaurant itself as honoring "history's great French chefs and cuisine," and what began as a rustic bistro has evolved into what the team calls a haute bistro. Executive Chef Amanda Langler, a Bartolotta Restaurants veteran since 2010 with leadership experience across several of the group's properties, leads a kitchen that balances classical technique with seasonal thinking. The inspiration draws directly on the travels of two-time James Beard Award-winning Chef Paul Bartolotta through France — a lineage that gives the menu genuine authority.

The Menu

Guests choose between a customizable four-course haute bistro menu with optional sommelier wine pairings, or a full à la carte selection. The à la carte list reads like a careful survey of the French repertoire: Soupe à l'Oignon gratinéed with Gruyère, Escargots à la Bourgogne under flaky puff pastry, Sole Meunière filleted tableside, Confit de canard with braised French lentils, and Steak Tartare with capers and Dijon. The Loup de mer en papillote — wild-caught sea bass baked in parchment with artichokes and fennel, opened at the table — shows the kitchen's flair for presentation grounded in classic method. Sunday brunch adds a three-course format alongside a Panier à pâtisserie of freshly baked pastries.

The Wine List

The cellar is a point of genuine distinction. Milwaukee's only all-French wine list, it spans Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Loire Valley, and the Rhône, curated by Certified Sommelier and General Manager Mariana Popescu. Wine Spectator has recognized the list continuously since 1998, most recently with its Best of Award of Excellence — a reflection of both depth and the care taken to match each bottle to the French cuisine on the plate.

The Room and the Experience

Polished but not stiff — the restaurant encourages "sophisticated attire" while genuinely welcoming all guests. Private dining rooms accommodate corporate events, wedding dinners, and gatherings of all scales, with dedicated event planners on hand. For those who want to linger on a Sunday morning, brunch by the lake has become, in the restaurant's own words, "one of Milwaukee's morning traditions."
