Undici Taverna Rustica

Tuscan farmhouse atmosphere, handcrafted Italian pastas, and New Jersey's largest Italian wine list. Wine Spectator-recognized since 2009.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Tuscan Farmhouse on the Jersey Shore

Undici Taverna Rustica sits at 11 West River Road in Rumson, its interior built from ancient stone, wood, tile, and plaster — a faithful recreation of a Tuscan farmhouse that has been thoughtfully updated without losing its rustic soul. Handcrafted ceramic art from artisans across Italy, lighting inspired by classic Italian design, and carefully considered renovations give the space a warmth that feels both rooted and alive. It is the kind of room where the details accumulate quietly and the atmosphere does the work.

The Wine List That Earned Its Reputation

The wine program is what first put Undici on the national map. Under the direction of managing partner Victor Rallo Jr., the cellar holds more than 1,300 labels spanning all twenty regions of Italy — claimed to be the largest selection of Italian wines in New Jersey. Rallo writes about the list with genuine conviction, describing Italian winemakers who still hold to the values of soil, sunshine, and soul, and the esoteric regional varieties — Schiopettino, Cagnina, Falanghina, Pigato — that rarely travel beyond their home provinces. That depth and diversity have earned Undici the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence consistently since 2009, a recognition that speaks to sustained quality rather than a single strong vintage.

Sommelier Rebecca Flynn and Anatoliy Vyshnevetskiy support the program on the floor, helping guests navigate a list that rewards curiosity.

The Kitchen: Regional Italian, Carefully Made

Executive Chef Josh Laurano and Chef de Cuisine Rob Zwirz lead a kitchen that treats Italian cooking as a living tradition rather than a fixed canon. The menu moves through the country's regions with confidence. The signature Focaccia di Recco — a Ligurian flatbread filled with Stracchino cheese and finished with sea salt — anchors the opening of every dinner. Handcrafted pastas range from a classic Tonarelli cacio e pepe with Pecorino Romano to a Fusilli al Ferretto Neri tossed with a full pound and a quarter of local lobster, sweet corn, and a hint of jalapeño. The Secondi reach from grilled Mediterranean branzino with zucchini escabeche to a veal chop al Marsala, and lamb chops with Roman-style baked semolina and pomegranate.

Lunch, available Friday through Sunday, brings the same Italian sensibility to a more relaxed register — Campanian-style brick oven-baked Panuozzi sandwiches, lighter pasta portions, and the full Focaccia di Recco alongside.

Private Dining and the Larger Experience

Undici handles private events — rehearsal dinners, corporate gatherings — with the same attention it brings to a table for two. The outdoor seating extends the space when the season allows. Whether the occasion is a long weekend lunch or a dinner built around a bottle from the Friuli, the restaurant's combination of serious Italian cuisine, an extraordinary wine list, and genuine hospitality makes it one of the more complete Italian dining experiences on the Jersey Shore.
