The story
Char Restaurant has built a quiet, durable reputation on South Highland Street in Memphis — the kind of place that earns a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and celebrates a tenth anniversary without making a fuss about either. Part of an employee-owned group with locations across the South, the Memphis outpost operates with the confidence of an institution that knows exactly what it is: a proper steakhouse where the details are taken seriously.
The menu structure at Char reflects an ambition beyond the typical steakhouse formula. Lunch runs Monday through Friday until 4 p.m. and on weekends until 2 p.m., when brunch takes over — an unusual offering for a steakhouse, and a welcome one. Dinner service carries the room from mid-afternoon through close, seven days a week. A dedicated kids' menu and a happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. round out a program designed to serve the neighborhood at every hour, not just for special occasions.
The wine list earned Char its Wine Spectator recognition, and the full wine and cocktails menu is available daily from open to close. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each evening, the bar area comes alive with a live piano performance — an understated touch that sets a tone without demanding attention.
Char takes private events seriously. Whether the occasion is a business meeting or a cocktail reception, a dedicated private dining team handles the details. For groups of six or more, catering is available for delivery or pickup, bringing the steakhouse experience off-site. A separate phone line for private dining speaks to how central this side of the business has become.
A dress code policy is in place — guests are asked to dress accordingly, a reminder that Char holds itself to a standard that extends beyond what's on the plate.
