The story
On Village Lane in Los Gatos, Tasting House operates as two complementary spaces under one roof: a wine bistro serving dinner nightly and a Champagne Bar open on weekends. The concept is straightforward — seasonal French-California cooking, a sommelier team that takes its work seriously, and a wine list deep enough to hold a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, an honor the house has earned for four consecutive years.
Executive Chef Julian Silvera came up in New York City before moving to Florida's Knife & Spoon, where he played a direct role in that restaurant earning a Michelin Star. At Tasting House he channels the same precision into a California-influenced French menu built on hyper-locally sourced ingredients, with a stated commitment to sustainability that extends to incorporating California's native food plants. Guests have described his cooking as "sophisticated and classic with creativity" — and the sommeliers match each dish with both a local and an international pairing, making the wine dimension feel like an extension of the kitchen rather than an afterthought.
More than 65 wines are available by the glass, alongside an international bottle list of around 1,000 selections. The Champagne Bar alone pours over 100 labels — Grower Champagnes, Special Club releases, and Premier Houses — served by a team that includes Certified Sommeliers and a Certified Specialist of Champagne. That program earned Tasting House recognition as one of America's 10 Best Spots to Enjoy Champagne by the Bureau du Champagne USA, and the title of Silicon Valley's Best Wine Bar and Champagne Bar by Modern Luxury.
On Friday and Saturday afternoons, the Champagne Bar menu runs from 11:30 AM, with caviar service, pommes frites, and a cheese plate alongside the bubbles. The same days bring a Traditional Afternoon Tea — teas from Mariage Frères of Paris, a three-tier tower of house-made pastries and scones, with optional caviar and Champagne add-ons. Come evening, live music plays from 6 to 9 PM, giving the room a warmth that guests from San Francisco to the Bay Area keep coming back for. For those who want the experience extended beyond the restaurant, monthly Champagne and Red Wine clubs deliver sommelier-curated selections to members' doors.
