Lewes Oyster House

A modern take on the colonial oyster house in historic Lewes, DE. Chef Sean Corea, inspired tavern fare, and a Wine Spectator-recognized list.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The First Town's Oyster House

In colonial America, the oyster house was a coastal gathering space — democratic, convivial, built around the bivalve. Lewes Oyster House, set inside the landmark Walsh Building on Second Street in Delaware's oldest city, revives that tradition with intention. The space honors the rich heritage of oyster consumption in 18th- and 19th-century Middle Atlantic taverns, and it does so without nostalgia becoming a crutch. This is a living, working American seafood restaurant, recognized by USA Today as a 2026 Restaurant of the Year.

The People Behind It

Three founders brought Lewes Oyster House to life, each with deep Delaware roots. Executive Chef Sean Corea grew up farming and wrestling in Camden, DE, before earning his stripes at the CIA in New York and working under Daniel Boulud at the Michelin-starred restaurant Daniel. He returned to the Delaware coast and built a "Best of Delaware" award-winning career before channeling it all into this project. General Manager Tom Little spent his formative years in Rehoboth hospitality before helping develop regionally recognized brands. Business Manager Tim Bartley brings 22 years of senior operations experience from the Charlie Palmer Collective, where he also served as general counsel.

What's on the Table

Chef Corea's menu reads as Mid-Atlantic comfort food presented in ways that feel fresh rather than fussy. Guests will find an LOH Seafood Tower, Rotisserie Ta Farms Chicken, Pan Roasted Duck Breast, and elevated boardwalk staples like Old Bay & Malt Vinegar Powder Fries and a Lobster Roll alongside what the restaurant calls its Damn Good Burger. Daily Oyster and Raw Bar menus run alongside lunch and dinner, and Happy Hour — offered daily from 3 to 5 pm at the Oyster Bar and Main Bar — features raw bar specials and libation deals.

The drink program is taken as seriously as the food. Ten taps pour a rotating lineup of German, Belgian, and Czech ales and lagers, served through a Czech side-pull faucet. Cocktails are crafted with care from ice to garnish, aiming to let the spirits speak for themselves.

A Wine List Worth the Recognition

The wine program at Lewes Oyster House is deliberately small and succinct — built around classic regions and varietals while reaching toward new discoveries from Slovenia, Georgia, the Canary Islands, and beyond. The goal, as the team puts it, was straightforward: wines that are well priced, well matched to the seafood-forward cuisine, and simply taste great. That approach earned the restaurant the 2025 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition the team wears lightly but earned deliberately. Wine Steward Diego Lascano leads a regular wine dinner series, pairing multi-course menus with producers from around the world — from Australian estates to small natural producers doing things sustainably and with personality.

The Room

The restaurant's landmark space includes an Oyster Bar, a Main Bar, and two dining rooms — the Walsh and Tap Rooms — suited for groups of up to eight. Just across the hall, The Gallo Room offers craft cocktails and bold small plates in a walk-in-only setting, open seven days a week. Lunch at Lewes Oyster House is also walk-in only; reservations are recommended for dinner.
