The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Historic Setting with Real Culinary Ambition

Lightfoot Restaurant occupies one of Leesburg's most distinctive addresses: a Romanesque revival building on North King Street that spent half a century as the People's Bank before opening its doors as a restaurant in 1999. The transformation preserved what was worth keeping — original bank vault doors, fine woodwork, and ornate ceilings — and layered in hand-painted silk Venetian chandeliers and vintage Parisian posters. The result is a dining room that carries genuine history without feeling like a museum.

The People Behind It

The restaurant is the creation of two sisters: Executive Chef Ingrid Gustavson and General Manager Carrie Gustavson Whitmer. Their shared vision has made Lightfoot one of Loudoun County's most enduring fine dining destinations, drawing both locals and visitors for more than two decades.

Chef Gustavson's approach centers on seasonal American cuisine with southern and ethnic accents — a style that keeps the menu grounded in what's fresh while maintaining a set of signature dishes that regulars return for specifically. Her Fried Green Tomatoes, Blue Ridge Spinach Salad, and the "Atomic" Crab Cake have become fixtures precisely because guests won't let them go. Daily specials for both lunch and dinner follow the freshest seasonal ingredients available, so there is always a reason to come back.

Recognition That Means Something

The wine list has earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — recognition that reflects genuine curation rather than sheer volume. It complements Chef Gustavson's cooking without overshadowing it. Locally, she has been named Loudoun's Favorite Chef multiple times by LoudounNow readers, and the restaurant itself has been recognized for both romantic dining and fine dining in the same community surveys.

What to Expect

Appetizers, entrées, and desserts are prepared with what the kitchen describes as meticulous attention to detail — breads and desserts made fresh on-site daily. Sunday brunch runs alongside the all-day menu, and the bar area hosts happy hour Wednesday through Friday and Sunday afternoons. The Sheridan Room and other event spaces make Lightfoot a serious option for private dinners, rehearsal dinners, and weddings, with the same seasonal American cuisine that drives the regular menu.

The building alone is worth the visit. Everything that happens inside it makes the case for staying.
