The story
In 2008, founder Doug Hovanec sat down with friends, opened a bottle (or two) of wine, and sketched out a concept that Birmingham had never seen before: an Italian infused steakhouse. The idea was straightforward — bring together the highest-quality hand-cut steaks grilled over a wood-burning fire and the warmth of classic Tuscan Italian cooking under one roof, in an atmosphere comfortable enough to linger in. That combination has made Bellini's a genuine destination on Cahaba Valley Road.
Bellini's occupies a category of its own as Birmingham's only Italian infused steakhouse. The kitchen hand-cuts every steak and finishes it over a wood-burning grill, while also producing house-made pastas, veal, and seafood prepared in the Tuscan tradition. The philosophy is direct: "OUR Passion is YOUR Food and YOUR Service." Every dish is built around what the restaurant calls a "sought-after, signature equilibrium of flavors," matched to the right wine or beverage — right through to dessert.
The wine program has earned formal recognition: Bellini's holds a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a reflection of the extensive, carefully curated selection that has been central to the restaurant's identity since its founding.
The kitchen rotates Chef's Features alongside a broad standing menu. Recent features have included a white lamb ragù with rotini, green peas, and asiago in a lemon-mint butter sauce; wood-fire grilled swordfish over caramelized onion cream sauce; and a seared duck breast salad with arugula, citrus, fennel, and blood orange vinaigrette — dishes that show the range of the Italian steakhouse concept.
The lunch menu covers Gulf oysters Rockefeller, fresh Gulf crab cakes, wood-grilled Caesar salad, and a full run of house-made pastas — from Crawfish Boil Ravioli with Conecuh sausage and chili crisp to a classic Fettuccini Alfredo with fresh cream, parmesan, and asiago. The bar opens ahead of dinner service, and weekly dessert specials round out the evening.
Beyond the dining room, Bellini's maintains dedicated private dining areas for both lunch and dinner groups, and a separate catering operation — Catering by Bellinis — handles drop-off orders, weddings, and hosted events. It is the kind of full-service Italian restaurant that works as well for a business lunch as for a celebratory dinner.
