The story
Set inside a historic 1934 home along Pacific Coast Highway, Selanne Steak Tavern brings the spirit of the classic American steakhouse to Laguna Beach with genuine warmth and without pretension. The restaurant was founded by two friends: Hockey Hall of Famer and six-time Olympian Teemu Selanne, and local businessman Kevin Pratt — a pairing that says something about the place's character. This is not a celebrity vanity project; it's a shared commitment to a comfortable, welcoming table where great food and good company take center stage.
The menu leans into the full range of what a well-executed American steakhouse can offer — succulent steaks and chops, poultry, game, and seafood, alongside artisan cocktails and a wine list that has earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence. That recognition reflects a program built with real depth and care, not an afterthought list. The Michelin Guide California has also recommended the restaurant, underscoring the consistency in the kitchen.
Guests can choose from five distinct spaces: the Loft, the Tavern, the Veranda, the Wine Library, and the Sunset Terrace — each with its own atmosphere, all sharing the warmth of the original historic structure. For groups of up to twelve, a private dining experience offers a customized multi-course menu with paired wines. And for something even more singular, VIII by Selanne takes the concept further: just 20 seats, one seating per evening, designed to be personal and unhurried.
Rounding out the experience is the b8kery, led by Michelin-trained Pastry Chef Camille Loecsey, whose gourmet cakes, artisanal cookies, and cupcakes bring the same level of craft to dessert that defines the rest of the menu.
