The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Lafayette Tradition, Four Decades Strong

Founded on the vision of Charles "Charlie" Goodson, Charley G's has been a cornerstone of Lafayette's restaurant scene since 1985. Nearly four decades later, the spirit of Southern hospitality that Charlie built remains the defining quality of every evening here. The restaurant is now owned and operated by Southern Hospitality Kitchens, a Lafayette-based group, with Executive Chef Holly Goetting leading the kitchen — a chef who has earned recognition from Louisiana Cookin' Magazine, the Times of Acadiana, and Acadiana Profile Magazine over a career spent refining what Louisiana cooking can be at its most considered.

The Food: Louisiana Seafood at the Center

The menu rotates seasonally, anchored by fresh Louisiana seafood, hand-cut aged steaks, and locally sourced produce. On any given evening, guests might find pan-seared sea bass over corn and tasso maque choux with Creole mustard vinaigrette, wood-grilled shrimp paired with jumbo lump crab sauté and a lemongrass-ginger honey glaze, or oven-roasted Ōra King salmon with an herb and pistachio crust and lemon caper butter. The Louisiana seafood tradition runs deep here, and the kitchen treats it with both technique and regional pride.

Two dishes have become genuine local institutions. The smoked duck and andouille gumbo — made with a rich, dark roux and a unique blend of Cajun spices — has been on the menu for over 30 years and remains the dish most associated with Charley G's name. The Béchamel Crab Cakes, served with roasted garlic spinach and charred lemon vinaigrette, are another fixture that regulars return for repeatedly.

For those who want to explore beyond the à la carte menu, Chef Goetting and Sous Chef Seth Ratcliff offer nightly specials: a dock-fresh catch of the day and a handcrafted market pasta, both built around what's best that week.

Wine, Music, and the Room Itself

The wine program earned Charley G's a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024 — recognition that reflects the seriousness with which the beverage team, led by certified sommeliers, approaches pairings. The wine list is extensive, and the restaurant hosts monthly ticketed dinners, including Tapas nights pairing select wines with Chef Holly's menus, and higher-end cocktail and spirits dinners from August through November.

The atmosphere is upscale but not stiff. Business casual attire is suggested, live piano plays in the bar seven nights a week, and the room accommodates everything from intimate dinners to large private parties. It is, as it has been since 1985, the kind of place Lafayette returns to.
