The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Complicated Simplicity of Italian Cooking

Farina takes its name from the Italian word for flour — and that single ingredient says everything about what matters here. At the corner of 19th and Baltimore in Kansas City's Crossroads Art District, Executive Chef and partner Michael Smith has built a restaurant around the quiet discipline of hand-made pasta, seasonal produce, and regional Italian cooking done with both rigor and warmth.

The People Behind the Restaurant

Chef Smith's path to Farina runs through Nice, Charlie Trotter's kitchen in Chicago, and a long tenure at Kansas City's revered The American Restaurant, where he became one of the city's first James Beard Award-winning chefs. He opened Michael Smith Restaurant and Extra Virgin — a Spanish tapas concept — in 2007 before turning his full attention to Italian food. Farina, he has said, continues his love affair with Kansas City.

Equally central to the restaurant is General Manager, partner, and Wine Director Nancy Smith, who oversees an extensive, globe-straddling wine list that has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence continuously since 2008 — most recently the Best of Award of Excellence in 2024. Her attention extends to every detail of the experience, from ambiance and service to the pacing of a meal.

What's on the Plate

The seasonal Italian menu is built around a simple, elegant idea: let the Midwest's natural seasons determine which region of Italy leads the kitchen. Spring might draw from Rome and Venice; summer from Calabria and Sicily; autumn from Tuscany and Umbria; winter from Lombardy and Piedmont. No passport needed, as the menu puts it.

At the heart of it all are the pastas. Every ribbon, strand, tube, and pocket is rolled, shaped, and filled by hand each afternoon. Spaghetti cacio e pepe, bucatini carbonara, and rigatoni all'amatriciana anchor a section devoted to the four classic preparations of Rome. Alongside them, dishes like potato gnocchi with braised rabbit and shiitakes, or summer corn ravioli with chanterelle mushrooms, show how fluidly Chef Smith moves between tradition and imagination.

Fish and shellfish arrive daily, sourced from trusted suppliers and featured at Farina's oyster bar. Produce, herbs, and meats come from local growers and farmers. Freshly baked focaccia arrives at the table to accompany every course.

The Full Experience

Beyond dinner service, Farina hosts a calendar of wine dinners — events that sell out quickly and draw serious collectors — as well as private dining for groups of any size, available seven days a week. The bar and oyster bar run a happy hour Tuesday through Friday, offering a more relaxed entry point into the kitchen's Italian cooking at accessible prices.

The result is a restaurant that takes its craft seriously without taking itself too seriously — a place where the details are attended to and the food speaks clearly.
