The Story Behind the Name

Elisa and Michele are the couple at the heart of Balsamico, a family-owned Italian restaurant on Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach. Both grew up in Italy and carried their roots with them when they relocated to San Diego to join family already settled here. That move, and an unwavering passion for food, led them to open Balsamico — a place where the cooking is as personal as it gets.

The name is no accident. Elisa and Michele hail from Emilia Romagna, the northern Italian region that gave the world balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto, and a long tradition of exceptional cured meats. Those regional touchstones shape every dish on the menu, and the specialty ingredients that can't be replicated locally are imported directly from Italy.

What to Expect

Balsamico describes itself simply: happiness is homemade. The kitchen works from scratch wherever possible, and what isn't made in-house is sourced from Italian producers. The result is a menu that reflects a specific place — Emilia Romagna — rather than a generic idea of Italian food.

Beyond the dining room, Balsamico extends its reach through catering, delivery, takeaway, and private party services, making it a go-to for events across the San Diego area as well as a neighborhood spot for a weeknight dinner.

Gambero Rosso, Italy's most authoritative food and wine guide, awarded Balsamico a Fork in its 2026 edition — a notable distinction for an Italian restaurant operating outside Italy, and a mark of the authenticity that Elisa and Michele have worked to bring to Southern California.
