The story
Zanti Cucina Italiana takes its name from a nickname. Santiago Peláez, the restaurant's founder, was known to his large, teasing family as "sentimental Santi" — a man whose earliest memories revolve around exploring food, cooking, and caring for those around him. That sentiment became a philosophy, and in June 2019 it became a restaurant, opening first in The Woodlands before expanding to Houston's River Oaks neighborhood on West Gray Street.
The name is a clue to what Zanti is: personal, warm, and rooted in a genuine love of the Italian table. Santiago built the concept alongside his brothers, drawing on years of growing a family hospitality business across multiple countries. The result is an Italian restaurant that treats atmosphere, company, and ingredients — l'ambiente, la compagnia, l'ingrediente — as equal partners to the food itself.
At the River Oaks location, Executive Chef Hilario Zamora leads the kitchen, while sommelier and manager Andres Blanco oversees a wine program that earned Zanti the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2024 — recognition that reflects both the depth of the list and the care taken in pairing it with Italian and Mediterranean cooking. The bar program extends well beyond wine, with an extensive selection of signature cocktails, spirits, and after-dinner drinks that make an evening here feel genuinely complete.
The River Oaks location maintains an upscale dress code, signaling the tone: this is Italian fine dining taken seriously, without being stiff about it. Live music plays on Friday and Saturday evenings. Brunch runs on weekends, lunch mid-week, and the kitchen is open through to late evening most nights. Private events, large groups, and outdoor seating are all accommodated, making Zanti as well-suited to a family gathering as to a celebratory dinner for two.
The team — assembled, as the restaurant puts it, con brio — was chosen for a shared insistence on quality and a history of excellence in hospitality. It shows in the details: thoughtfully chosen ingredients, genuine service, and a room that invites you to stay a little longer than you planned.
