The story
The story of Perry's Steakhouse & Grille begins not in a white-tablecloth dining room but behind a meat counter. In 1979, Bob Perry opened a modest butcher shop in Houston that quickly became a neighborhood staple. Seven years later, his son Chris Perry persuaded him to add dining tables — a small change that set the course for one of the country's most recognized steakhouse groups. By 1993, the success of that original market had given Chris the confidence to launch Perry's Steakhouse & Grille as its own concept, and the River Oaks location on W. Gray carries that founding spirit to this day.
What distinguishes Perry's Steakhouse from a typical fine-dining destination is the direct line running from those butcher shop roots to what lands on your plate. The kitchen works with USDA Prime beef, and the house signature — the Famous Pork Chop — is carved tableside, a ritual that has become synonymous with the Perry's name. The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, reflecting the same attention to quality that defines the food side of the menu. Perry's Bar 79 rounds out the experience, offering bar bites, handcrafted cocktails, craft beer, and a portfolio of Reserve Wines for guests who want to linger before or after dinner.
Perry's describes its approach as a Rare and Well Done® experience — a phrase that captures both the range of the steakhouse menu and the standard of hospitality the team holds itself to. Across more than four decades, that commitment has driven expansion to over twenty steakhouse locations nationwide, yet the Houston flagship remains the anchor of the brand. Private dining and event spaces make it a practical choice for celebrations and corporate gatherings, while outdoor seating and a full lunch and dinner service keep it accessible for everyday occasions.
Perry's Steakhouse & Grille on W. Gray is the kind of place where the heritage is real, the beef is prime, and the tableside pork chop carving never gets old.
