A Story That Started With a Hamburger

Morton's The Steakhouse traces its origins to an unlikely moment: co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch, both working at the Playboy Club in Montreal, connected over what Arnie called the best hamburger he'd ever tasted — instantly dubbed the "Million-Dollar Hamburger." That spark of mutual respect for quality led them to open the first Morton's on State Street in Chicago in 1978. More than four decades later, the vision behind that original steakhouse — quality, consistency, genuine hospitality — drives every location, including the Downtown Houston outpost on McKinney Street.

USDA Prime Beef, Sourced Without Compromise

The foundation of Morton's reputation is its beef. The kitchen works with the same suppliers it has used since day one, selecting only USDA prime-aged cuts — the top 2% of beef available in the United States. If an order doesn't meet Morton's standards, it doesn't get cut for the plate. That discipline is what allows the steakhouse to back the claim "The Best Steak...Anywhere" with something more than marketing.

The menu extends well beyond the grill. Chilean sea bass, oysters on the half shell, colossal shrimp, and red king crab legs round out a surf-and-turf range that rewards guests who want something lighter alongside, or instead of, the prime cuts. Seasonal additions — including Prime Bavette Steak Frites, Wagyu Beef Stroganoff, and Oysters Rockefeller — keep the menu from standing still.

The Bar and the Wine Program

Bar 12-21 runs a cocktail program built on hand-crafted classics and seasonal creations, paired with imported and local craft beers. The wine program, however, is where Morton's has earned formal recognition: the Houston location holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, part of a chain-wide achievement that sees each Morton's maintain a list of more than 300 wines. Exclusive vintages, private wine lockers, sommelier selections, and rotating "Bottle Shock" features give serious wine drinkers genuine depth to explore. The team includes on-staff sommeliers and general managers trained to guide pairings, and Morton's hosts the Guild of Sommeliers for exclusive tastings in select private dining rooms.

Atmosphere and Private Events

The dining rooms balance classic elegance with a lively bar scene — suited equally to a business dinner, a celebration, or a relaxed evening out. Private rooms accommodate everything from intimate wine dinners to larger corporate events, and Morton's partners with athletes and their foundations for charity events like its Celebrity Server nights. For guests who prefer the experience at home, catering and Prime Platters extend the steakhouse table beyond the restaurant walls.
