The story
In 2002, Executive Chef Hugo Ortega opened his namesake restaurant in Houston's Montrose neighborhood as a personal homecoming — a return to the foods of his native Mexico. The result is one of the most decorated Mexican restaurants in the United States, housed in a beautifully restored 1925 building designed by Joseph Finger, the same architect behind Houston's Art Deco City Hall. The Latin-inspired structure has been updated with contemporary touches while preserving the warmth of old Mexico, making the space feel both refined and genuinely welcoming.
Ortega's philosophy is direct: "Authentic Mexican cooking is a world-class cuisine that has remained virtually unchanged by the outside world. The food is as light and fresh as a seafood cocktail prepared by fishermen on the beach; as deep and complex as the moles of Oaxaca made with an astounding number of ingredients; and as earthy as the simplest handmade corn tortilla."
That breadth is exactly what the menu delivers. Everything is made from scratch — cheeses, moles, tortillas, chocolate — drawing on the distinct regional traditions of Mexico rather than a single, homogenized version of the cuisine. Starters range from braised oxtail empanadas and grilled octopus with chipotle-tomatillo salsa to pan-sautéed chapulines served with guacamole and tortillas. The seafood section is a particular strength: pan-seared scallops with poblano sauce, yellowfin tuna ceviche with kiwi and mango, and a mixed seafood sauté of scallop, shrimp, lobster, clams and octopus. Heartier plates include short ribs braised in mole pasilla, crispy duck with mole poblano, and Central Texas lamb slow-roasted in agave skin. Seasonal specials — like a dedicated squash blossom menu featuring quesadillas with Oaxacan cheese and a squash blossom mole — reflect the kitchen's commitment to cooking with what's at its best.
Executive Pastry Chef Ruben Ortega oversees desserts and earned a national James Beard semifinalist nod for Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2022.
Hugo Ortega was named Best Chef: Southwest at the 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards, the culmination of six consecutive years as a finalist in that category. He also received the Craig Claiborne Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Foodways Alliance that same year. The restaurant has appeared on essential restaurant lists from Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure, Texas Monthly, and the Houston Chronicle, and has been recognized among the best Mexican restaurants in the country. The wine program, which holds the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, has been praised consistently since the restaurant's early years — a fitting complement to one of Houston's most serious tequila and cocktail lists.
