The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Steakhouse Rooted in Land and Sea

Double Barrel Steak sits within the main clubhouse of The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort, a 3,500-acre luxury property in Richmond, Rhode Island. The setting shapes the menu in a direct way: the kitchen draws on the surrounding landscape and the state's coastal identity in equal measure, producing a style of modern American cooking that is genuinely specific to its place.

The culinary team describes their approach as "a leading pioneer in American cooking," centering the menu on dry-aged beef while simultaneously paying tribute to Rhode Island's "Ocean State" heritage through what they call ocean steaks — swordfish, halibut, and tuna treated with the same seriousness as their land-based counterparts. One signature move is the resurrection of Rhode Island's famous swordfish chops, a preparation that first gained international attention when it appeared at New York City's Park Avenue Café in the early 1990s. Bringing it back to its home state gives Double Barrel Steak a clear point of culinary distinction as both a seafood restaurant and a steakhouse. Seasonal game from The Preserve's own grounds rounds out the menu, connecting the plate to the landscape just outside the dining room windows.

The Menu in Practice

Dining here spans the full day. Breakfast and a Sunday brunch menu run alongside lunch and dinner service on most days of the week. Brunch highlights include a Beef Short Rib Hash & Eggs, an 8oz Wagyu blend DB Burger, and a Pheasant Sandwich on brioche — a nod to the resort's outdoor sporting life. The dessert program has earned its own recognition: the "Not-so-Humble" Key Lime Pie received the Editors' Choice Dessert accolade from RI Monthly, and it remains a fixture on the menu, served with golden berries and fruit sauce.

The wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023, a mark of a program that takes its cellar as seriously as its kitchen.

The Atmosphere

Smart casual attire is expected, and the dress code is enforced — a detail that signals the tone of the room without overstating it. The Preserve itself was conceived as a luxury resort and master-planned community for outdoor enthusiasts, and the restaurant reflects that ethos: refined but grounded, with a connection to the natural landscape that feels earned rather than decorative. Open to the public, with reservations strongly suggested.
