The story
On Kapahulu Avenue — one of Oahu's most food-focused streets — Rigo Spanish Italian occupies a standalone house with high ceilings and an open, relaxed dining room. The restaurant is operated by HUGE Co., Ltd., a Japanese hospitality group with a network of acclaimed concepts across Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto and beyond. Rigo Kapahulu is the group's first venture outside Japan, and it carries a deliberate philosophy into everything on the plate.
The guiding motto here is No vague — Define: a commitment to clarity over ambiguity. Rather than blurring the line between Spanish and Italian cooking, Rigo looks squarely at what each tradition means and brings both into sharp focus. The result is a menu that moves between tapas, wood-fired pizza, house-made pasta, and grilled dishes — all shaped by Hawaii's local ingredients and the spirit of the two cuisines.
Central to the kitchen is a Josper, the Spanish charcoal-and-wood oven imported directly from Spain. It gives the grilled dishes a character that a conventional oven simply cannot replicate. The wood-fired oven handles pizzas, while the pasta is made in-house — both adapted to the flavors and produce of the islands.
Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for 2025 reflects the seriousness of Rigo's list. The same care that HUGE brings to its Japanese restaurants — the group has written openly about the thought behind its wine curation — carries over to Honolulu. Bottles are available at consistent, accessible price points, in keeping with the group's philosophy of making quality approachable rather than exclusive.
The dining room seats 81 guests across indoor and outdoor spaces, with a bar and options for private parties. Lunch and dinner service run most days of the week, and takeaway is available. The atmosphere is unhurried and convivial — high ceilings, natural light, and a setting that feels at home in Hawaii while staying true to the Spanish-Italian identity the kitchen works hard to maintain.
