The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Hilton Head's Enduring Italian Table

For more than two decades, Michael Anthony's Cucina Italiana has held its place as Hilton Head Island's benchmark for Italian cooking. The restaurant describes itself as "a truly moveable feast" — a phrase that captures something real about the scope of what happens here: fine dining upstairs, a casual trattoria and market café, a working cooking school, and a catering and private events operation, all under one roof in Orleans Plaza on New Orleans Road.

The kitchen's reputation rests on carefully crafted pasta, veal, and seafood — dishes that reflect an unwavering commitment to fresh ingredients and technique rather than novelty. A Restaurant Week prix fixe menu offers a useful window into the range: antipasti like Gamberi e Capesante in Padella (shrimp and bay scallops with butter, garlic, white wine, and lemon) sit alongside secondi such as Tagliatelle al Ragù di Cinghiale (house-made ribbon pasta with wild boar ragù), Vitello alla Valdostana (veal tenderloin with prosciutto, fontina, and wild mushrooms), and Sardi alla Liguria (house-made pasta shells with pancetta, peas, and Parmigiano cream). Desserts — limoncello tiramisù, panna cotta, house-made profiteroles — are made in-house.

The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and the list is put to work throughout the year in a serious calendar of food-and-wine events. Multi-course wine dinners pair the kitchen's cooking with producers from Piemonte, Napa, Willamette Valley, and beyond, with winemakers and sommeliers often present to guide the evening. These are ticketed, seated affairs with limited capacity — a different register from the main dining room, but sharing the same standard of hospitality.

The Cooking School

Chef Kenny Warthen leads the cooking school's demonstration and hands-on classes, which run weekly and cover the breadth of Italian regional cuisine — from Alpine fonduta and duck braised in Arneis wine, to Emilia-Romagna classics like tagliatelle with prosciutto and veal cutlets Modena style, to seafood preparations with a distinctly Italian hand. Each class opens with a glass of Prosecco and closes with a recipe booklet to take home. Private classes are also available.

The Full Picture

The atmosphere at Michael Anthony's is described as "casually elegant" — a setting that works equally well for an intimate dinner and a larger private event. The restaurant occupies two floors, accommodates private parties in dedicated dining rooms, and extends its reach through in-home private chef services. The adjacent Market Café handles lunch, happy hour, artisanal pizzas, Italian coffees, and a retail section stocked with house-made pastas, soups, sauces, and specialty products.

Twenty-four years into its run, Michael Anthony's remains what it set out to be: a serious Italian restaurant with the depth and range to earn its reputation many times over.
