The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Restaurant Shaped by Place and Legacy

The Red Rooster is the flagship dining room of the Woodstock Inn & Resort, set on The Green in the village of Woodstock, Vermont. The inn itself carries a history stretching back to 1793, when Captain Israel Richardson built one of the first lodging accommodations in the newly designated shire town. The property was reimagined under the stewardship of conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, whose vision of thoughtful authenticity and deep respect for the natural landscape continues to define everything here — including what arrives on the plate.

Seasonal American Cuisine, Sourced Close to Home

The Red Rooster's approach to American cuisine is grounded in the Vermont landscape. The culinary team works directly with regional producers and with the resort's own Master Gardener at Kelly Way Gardens to harvest fresh ingredients for the seasonal menus. The result is cooking built around what is actually growing and available — farm-fresh, prepared from scratch, and shaped by the rhythms of New England's four seasons. Even the cocktail program draws on garden-harvested ingredients. Breakfast at the Red Rooster might mean an organic egg breakfast sandwich or a local yogurt parfait; the same commitment to regional sourcing carries through to dinner.

A Wine List Recognized by Wine Spectator

The beverage program matches the kitchen's ambition. Director of Restaurants and Sommelier Anton Vicar oversees a wine list that earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — recognition given to lists that offer interesting selections appropriate to their cuisine and appealing to a wide range of wine lovers. The list spans sparkling wines from Champagne and California, an extensive range of Chardonnays from Burgundy to the Sonoma Coast, and a broad selection of reds from Bordeaux to Oregon Pinot Noir, with half-bottle options and after-dinner sips rounding things out. Servers are on hand to suggest pairings.

The Setting

The Red Rooster sits within a resort that has been recognized among the top hotels in the Northeast, carrying the legacy of Rockefeller-era craftsmanship through Vermont marble, hand-crafted cabinetry, and spaces designed to feel like a well-appointed New England home. Outdoor seating, private dining rooms, and a chef's table extend the options for different occasions. For guests who want to go deeper into the culinary side, the resort also hosts wine dinners and culinary classes, making the American cuisine on offer here part of a broader conversation about food, land, and Vermont's agricultural heritage.
