At 412 S. Main Street in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Joshua Wilton House has been serving the Shenandoah Valley for over 30 years. The Victorian building houses a fine dining restaurant, a bed and breakfast inn, and a rotating art gallery — a combination that makes it one of the more distinctive addresses in the region. Wine Spectator recognized the program with its Award of Excellence in 2025, a reflection of the seriousness with which the house approaches both food and drink.

The Kitchen: French Craft, Local Roots

Executive Chef Tom French brings a biography that matches the restaurant's ambitions. Born and raised in England, he began culinary school at 16 and earned an internship cooking for the Queen of England at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. He arrived in the United States after graduation, worked at Keswick Hall, and joined Joshua Wilton House in 2009 — becoming Executive Chef in 2017 and earning Best Chef in the Valley for Harrisonburg in 2018. His approach is precise: French culinary techniques applied to ingredients sourced from local farmers, with a commitment to making each component on the plate perform at its best.

Pastry Chef Amy Mercer rounds out the kitchen with a background that includes time spent in France studying French patisserie. Guests regularly praise her focaccia, crème brûlée, and coffee cake — the kind of detail work that signals a kitchen paying attention all the way to the end of the meal.

The Menu and the Cellar

The American and French cooking at Joshua Wilton House extends naturally into catering, where the team brings the same standards off-premise. The catering menu draws on Shenandoah Valley produce — dishes like beef tenderloin with horseradish crème fraîche, lump crab cakes with lemon dill aioli, and vegetable ratatouille in the Provençal style reflect the kitchen's range.

The beverage program, recognized by Wine Spectator, is supported by a Wilton Wine Club offering members access to allocated bottles, wine-pairing dinners, and selections curated by Chef French himself. It's a program built for people who take wine as seriously as the food it accompanies.

The gallery walls, framed by Victorian architecture, host rotating exhibitions of local artists each season, with "Meet the Artist" evenings open to guests.
