The story
Established in 2007, The Lazy Goat sits on the banks of the Reedy River at 170 River Place in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The setting does a lot of the work: floor-to-ceiling windows line both the upstairs bar and the downstairs dining room, framing the city skyline, while a spacious open-air patio extends the experience outdoors for those who want the river breeze and the people-watching that comes with it. Dozens of clocks adorn the walls throughout — a deliberate, playful reminder to slow down and relish the moment.
The kitchen draws from a broad Mediterranean arc — Spain, Morocco, Italy, France, Greece, North Africa, and the Middle East — and Executive Chef Kyle Swartzendruber shapes that range into a menu designed for sharing. Starters and smaller plates include the signature Fried Goat Cheese with pistachio dust, pepper, and vanilla honey, alongside dishes like Moroccan Lamb braised shank with flatbread and cucumber yogurt, and Lamb Souvlaki with sumac from the Hot Mezze menu. Larger plates have included NC Trout Provençale with smoked tomato sauce and grilled artichoke, Dark Spore Mushroom Tagliatelle with applejack beurre blanc and Grana Padano, and Mediterranean Fried Chicken with Aleppo honey. Desserts lean into the same regional spirit — Loukoumades, the cinnamon-sugar Greek doughnuts with pomegranate fluid gel and crushed pistachio, are a notable finish.
The menu is structured around "graze and nibble" sections alongside tapas and fuller entrées, making it equally suited to a leisurely lunch or an unhurried dinner with a group.
The beverage program is taken seriously here. An ever-evolving list of curated European vintages is overseen with the help of Assistant Wine Director Scotland Roberts, and the program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — a mark of a list with genuine depth and range. Refined cocktails and a considered beer selection round out the options.
The Lazy Goat is one of ten concepts operated by the Table 301 Restaurant Group in Greenville, a group that has helped establish the city as a credible dining destination. General Manager Erica Painter leads the front of house, and the restaurant has drawn consistent press attention — including coverage in Vogue — as Greenville's food scene has grown in national profile. The combination of location, Mediterranean cuisine, and a wine list recognized by Wine Spectator makes it one of the more complete dining experiences the city has to offer.
