The story
Since opening its doors in 1955, Elbow Room Bar & Grill has been woven into the fabric of Fresno's dining culture. Situated in Fig Garden Village, the restaurant began as a neighborhood favorite built around a steak sandwich and an easy, welcoming atmosphere. Today, it remains that and considerably more — a full-scale American restaurant where premium steaks, handcrafted cocktails, and a nationally recognized wine program share the same table.
In 1994, restaurateur Mike Shirinian took the helm and set about expanding the space while carefully preserving its original character. Under his leadership, Elbow Room added two wine cellars, a climate-controlled Vineyard Patio, and the Elbow Room Market, each addition layering depth onto a legacy rather than replacing it.
The current kitchen is led by Chef de Cuisine Eric Rodriguez, a Le Cordon Bleu graduate who previously cooked at San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. His approach is best described as elevated comfort — dishes like Filet Mignon Meatloaf with mushroom Bordelaise and whipped potatoes, or Pistachio Almond Chicken Milanese with arugula, almond pesto, and balsamic reduction, sit alongside the timeless Elbow Room Famous Steak Sandwich: an 8oz. center-cut bistro steak on jalapeño cheese bread. The kitchen also features Ponzu Salmon over soba noodles with tequila ponzu, and a Black Angus Cheeseburger that draws on the same sourcing philosophy as the steaks.
That sourcing philosophy is central to what Elbow Room does. The restaurant's dry-aged program uses Nebraska-sourced 1855 Black Angus beef, aged in-house for 28 days and hand-cut to order. Prime Rib from the same 1855 program is a recurring anchor on the menu. Produce comes from Central Valley farms wherever possible, and the kitchen's seasonal rotation keeps the American menu grounded in what's actually growing nearby.
In 2025, Wine Spectator awarded Elbow Room its Best of Award of Excellence — a distinction held by roughly 1,700 restaurants worldwide. It's a meaningful benchmark for a bar-and-grill in California's Central Valley, and it reflects years of deliberate curation. The wine list spans a range of vintages and varietals designed to pair across the full menu, from a weekday lunch to a celebratory dinner. The restaurant also runs regular "Glass Class" evenings — 30 to 45-minute guided tastings focused on specific regions, with seasonal food pairings and the chance to take bottles home.
Inside, the restaurant offers cozy booths and a warm bar setting. Outside, the Vineyard Patio opens to fresh air when the weather allows and shifts to a climate-controlled environment when it doesn't. Private dining and banquet spaces make it a practical choice for events, and the menu extends to family packs and catering for those who want the Elbow Room experience off-site. Weekend brunch runs Saturday and Sunday, and happy hour adds another rhythm to the week.
Nearly seventy years in, Elbow Room continues to do what it has always done: serve Fresno well, with genuine hospitality and food that earns its place on the table.
