The story
Since 2006, Red Pony Restaurant has held a distinct place on Franklin, Tennessee's Main Street — a chef-owned fine dining room where Southern cooking is treated with both reverence and imagination. Owner and Executive Chef Jason McConnell describes the approach simply as "Sophisticated Southern," and that phrase does real work: the menu pays homage to the food he grew up on in rural Rives, TN, while reflecting the broader tastes he developed traveling through the Southeast and beyond.
McConnell's path to the stove was anything but direct. He studied Political Science at the University of Mississippi before enrolling at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Returning to Tennessee, he opened Red Pony as his first concept in 2006, and has since built a group of several restaurants under the McConnell Hospitality Group. Red Pony remains the flagship — the place where his culinary sensibility is most fully expressed.
The menu changes roughly six times a year, driven by seasonal ingredients and McConnell's ongoing travels. Everything is made from scratch, with a deliberate emphasis on Tennessee-sourced products. A handful of signature dishes anchor the menu across seasons; the rest rotate to keep things dynamic for regulars and first-timers alike.
Red Pony occupies two levels, each with its own dining room and bar. Upstairs, a lounge area offers a more relaxed setting for cocktails before or after dinner. The bar program is taken as seriously as the kitchen — cocktails and the wine list are designed to shift with the menu, and the restaurant earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that speaks to the depth and curation of the cellar.
The dress code is described as "approachable" — no formal requirements, but baseball caps, flip flops, and sleeveless shirts are discouraged. The restaurant aims for an atmosphere that feels elegant without being stiff, and service is treated as inseparable from the food itself. McConnell's stated goal: every first-time guest becomes a future regular.
Beyond the Wine Spectator honor, Red Pony has been recognized by Nashville Scene as Best Restaurant in Williamson County, and by OpenTable across multiple categories including Best Food, Best Service, and Best Contemporary American. For a restaurant rooted in Southern cuisine with genuine fine-dining ambition, that breadth of recognition reflects a kitchen and front-of-house that consistently deliver.
