The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Seasonal. Local. Exceptional.

Artisan opened in 2015 with a clear intention. Kurt Janowsky, chef and founder of Navarre Hospitality Group, wanted to build what he described as "a warm and inviting modern American restaurant that delivers an uncommon hospitality experience." A decade on, that straightforward ambition has grown into one of the most recognized fine dining destinations in Indiana, earning a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2025 — a distinction that speaks directly to the depth and seriousness of the beverage program.

The Kitchen Behind the Menu

The cooking at Artisan is shaped by Chef Ryan Wilson, whose career reads like a map of serious American kitchens. He came up through the refined Midwestern foundations of Cafe Navarre, then sharpened his technique at Alinea and The Aviary in Chicago before helping open Cascade. He returned to Artisan bringing what his own tasting events describe as "experience, restraint, and intention" — a combination that defines the restaurant's approach to French-inflected American cuisine. Menus rotate with the seasons, keeping ingredients at the center and technique in service of flavor rather than spectacle.

What to Expect at the Table

The kitchen is comfortable with both precision and boldness. A recent special-event menu offered a Truffled Cauliflower Velouté with black truffle and pickled grape, a Miso King Salmon with yuzu-blood orange vinaigrette, and American Wagyu finished with foie gras jus and black garlic — dishes that show the French technique underlying the American ingredient-forward approach. The beverage side matches that ambition: Artisan regularly hosts Master Sommeliers and winemakers for multi-course pairing dinners, and the Wine Spectator recognition confirms the list holds its own against any room in the region.

Beyond the Regular Menu

The restaurant runs a lively calendar of events — winemaker dinners, tasting clubs, and seasonal brunches — that give regulars a reason to return and newcomers a lower-stakes entry point. A Women & Wine Tasting Club, blind sparkling wine sessions, and intimate evenings with figures like Master Sommelier Lawrence J. O'Brien of Jackson Family Wines all sit comfortably alongside the standard dinner service. Private events and catering round out the offering for those who want the Artisan experience off-site.

At 505 South Main Street in Elkhart, this is American fine dining taken seriously — personal in scale, rigorous in execution, and genuinely welcoming in spirit.
