The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Seoul Original Takes Root in Durham

Cucciolo Osteria on West Main Street in Durham is the American home of a concept born in Seoul, Korea. Cousins Jimmy and Julian Kim opened the Durham location as a sister to their original Korean outpost, carrying over the same philosophy: simple, honest Italian cuisine made with the highest quality ingredients, served in a space that feels upscale without ever feeling stiff.

The restaurant's wine program earned a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 2025 — recognition that speaks to the seriousness with which the team approaches every element of the dining experience, not just what's on the plate.

Pasta at the Center

The menu is deliberately small, rotating with the seasons and built around pasta. That focus keeps the kitchen sharp and the ingredients fresh. Expect handmade shapes paired with carefully considered sauces — the kind of cooking where restraint is the point. The Kims describe the goal plainly: serve food that is "simple and delicious," anticipate what guests need before they ask, and let the quality of the ingredients do the talking.

The Italian cuisine here is modern rather than strictly traditional — there's a "twist," as the restaurant puts it — but the foundations are classical. Seasonal produce, house-made components, and a tight menu that changes rather than sprawls.

The Space and the Ethos

Cucciolo Osteria is a dinner-only destination at 601 W. Main St., part of a small family of restaurants that includes Cucciolo Terrazza in Raleigh and Cucciolo Famiglia in Durham's Southpoint neighborhood. The Osteria is the flagship — the one where the concept is most focused, the menu most edited, and the atmosphere most attuned to a proper evening out.

The Kim cousins have built something genuinely coherent: a room where care for guests is treated as seriously as the food, and where a Wine Spectator-recognized cellar backs up every plate of pasta with a pour worth thinking about.
