The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Spirit of Southern Italy on Woodward Avenue

San Morello is Chef Andrew Carmellini's Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Detroit, drawing its soul from the piazzas of Southern Italy and Sicily. The concept is straightforward and confident: authentic wood-fired cooking, housemade pastas, and seasonal ingredients sourced locally — no pretense, just the kind of food that makes a neighborhood feel like home.

The restaurant's wine program has earned the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, a recognition that speaks to the depth and care behind the list — a fitting complement to a kitchen that takes Italian cooking seriously.

What's on the Table

The menu moves through the full arc of Italian dining. Antipasti set the tone: AC's Famous Sheep's Milk Ricotta with hot honey and garlic has become a signature, and the Grilled Octopus with panelle, crushed fava bean, and mint reflects the Sicilian sensibility running through the kitchen. Wood-fired pizzas — including a Sicilian pie with pistachio pesto, fennel sausage, and aged provolone — come out of the same fire that drives the secondi.

Housemade pasta is where the Italian cooking finds its clearest expression. The Spaghetti alla Chitarra with manila clams, garlic, lemon, and cherry tomato; the Pappardelle with lamb bolognese, sheep's milk ricotta, and mint; and the enigmatically listed "My Grandmother's Ravioli" all speak to a kitchen rooted in craft. From the wood-fired grill, proteins like Branzino with shrimp scampi and Lamb Arrosto with farro piccolo and pistachio mint gremolata round out the evening.

All Day, Every Day

San Morello runs from early morning through late night. Weekday breakfasts and a Pronto Prix Fixe lunch ($38 per person, Monday through Friday) make it a genuine neighborhood anchor, not just a dinner destination. Weekend brunch adds dishes like Eggs al Forno and Breakfast Spaghetti with smoked bacon and a poached farm egg. A daily Piccolini service from 3 to 5 pm fills the afternoon gap. Private dining and event spaces extend the restaurant's reach for larger gatherings.
