The story
Luca D'Italia sits at the corner of 7th Avenue and Grant Street in Denver's Governor's Park neighborhood, and from the beginning Chef Frank Bonanno has intended it to be more than a restaurant. In his own words, Luca is "a celebration – of family, of community, of raising glasses over laughter and sumptuous food true to its Italian heritage." That ethos is baked into every detail, from the wood-fired kitchen to the cozy dining room where seasonal Italian cooking anchors every meal.
Bonanno is one of Denver's most consequential culinary figures – the force behind more than ten restaurants and bars, a PBS cooking series, and a group that has launched over 25 chefs and restaurateurs of their own. Luca is part of that Bonanno Concepts family, sharing a block with Mizuna and Salita, and it holds a particular place in the story: Valentine's Day is Luca's opening anniversary and the birthday of Luca Bonanno himself, making the restaurant's name something genuinely personal.
The heart of the menu is fresh pasta, made in-house and hand-cranked daily. The Wild Mushroom Fusilli – described simply as "our signature pasta" – brings wild mushrooms into a creamy Parmesan sauce finished with truffle oil. Pappardelle Bolognese follows a Bonanno family recipe of veal, beef and pork tossed with San Marzano tomato. The Carbonara Agnolotti arrives as tiny pillows filled with parsnip purée, pancetta and pecorino in a carbonara sauce, while the Lobster Fra Diavolo runs fresh tagliatelle through San Marzano tomatoes and Calabrian chile.
Beyond pasta, the wood-fired kitchen produces pizzas built on a decades-old sourdough starter and imported Caputo flour – a crust the restaurant calls "unique and deeply delicious." House-cured salumi, served with spicy gnocco fritto and seasonal mostarda, and a burrata described simply as "the gold standard" round out the antipasti. Secondi range from braised short rib over Parmesan polenta to a burrata-stuffed chicken Parmesan that the menu introduces with a frank "I mean. Come on."
The Italian wine program at Luca earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024 – recognition that reflects the care given to pairing. By-the-glass pours lean heavily Italian, from a Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo to a Falanghina and a Chianti Classico Sangiovese, complementing a menu that is built around the same regional traditions. Executive Chef Abby McCarty leads the kitchen, and the restaurant also offers an $80 per person Chef's Tasting Menu for those who want to move through the full range of what Luca can do.
Luca operates within a broader philosophy of hospitality that Bonanno Concepts calls "Creating Happy People" – including a tipless pay structure designed to bring equity between front-of-house and kitchen teams. Private dining, a chef's table, catering, and hands-on pasta-making classes with Chef McCarty extend the experience well beyond a single dinner. The Italian cooking here is the kind that earns loyalty: generous, technically grounded, and made to be shared.
