The story
Tango Room began, as co-owner Simon Roberts tells it, over a glass of wine. That origin story says everything about this 60-seat destination in Dallas's Design District: the wine comes first, and the food rises to meet it. Tucked inside the Decorative Center on Hi Line Drive, the restaurant is a passion project shared by Roberts and co-owner Tim Headington — an homage to the American steakhouse filtered through the sensibilities of two people who take their cellars very seriously.
Entering through velvet drapes, guests step into a richly appointed dining room of mahogany wood, burgundy booths, and vintage brass fixtures. Several pieces from Headington's blue-chip art collection punctuate the walls, giving the space the feel of a private club rather than a conventional restaurant. It works equally well for a celebratory dinner, a client evening, or a well-planned date night. For groups of six or more, a Chef's Table experience adds concierge service, amuse-bouches, and a series of chef's courses to the occasion.
Executive Chef David Gomez anchors the menu in the canon — NY strip, pomme purée, foie gras — while reaching further with dishes like lobster corndogs and whole-roasted Peking duck. The American steakhouse format is the foundation; curiosity is the seasoning. A signature Fruits de Mer and chicken and caviar bites paired with Bollinger Special Cuvée hint at the kitchen's range, and happy hour (Tuesday through Thursday, 5–7 pm) brings half-price specialty cocktails and wines by the glass to the equation.
Wine Director Simon Roberts spent more than 30 years building relationships with producers before opening Tango Room. His previous members-only operation, Graileys Fine Wines, was the only place in Dallas where certain exclusive vintages could be found. That access now flows directly into Tango Room's list — a lineup that features names like Harlan Estate, Ornellaia, Quintessa, and Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande alongside discoveries from smaller estates. Sommelier Nick Burns and the rest of the floor team are on hand to guide the selection. Wine Spectator recognized the program with its Award of Excellence in 2023, a reflection of both depth and curation.
For guests who want to take something home, the in-house wine shop stocks the sommelier's picks and rare selections available for purchase any day, all day.
