The story
1776 Restaurant operates on a straightforward conviction: everyone deserves good food. That belief shapes every decision at this Crystal Lake destination, from the ingredients on the plate to the way the dining room is run. The result is a place that McHenry County can, in the restaurant's own words, "genuinely be proud of."
Owner and entrepreneur Rhienna McClain built 1776 around a clear set of principles — no compromise on ingredients, no third-party delivery, no big egos in the kitchen. Resident Chef Jill Vedaa leads a 100% scratch kitchen that sources exclusively from local Illinois farmers and artisan producers, among them Nichols Farm, Holcomb Hollow, Meats by Linz, and Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters. Wine and Spirits Director Erik Nordstrom oversees a cellar that earned 1776 the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence in 2023 — a meaningful distinction that reflects the same seriousness applied to the food side of the menu.
Everything that leaves the kitchen is made from scratch and is naturally gluten-free — not as a marketing angle, but as a baseline standard. The American cuisine changes with weekly specials curated by Chef Vedaa; recent features have included grilled octopus with roasted potatoes, olives, and oranges, and salmon with grilled zucchini and saffron cream sauce. On Wednesdays, every bottle of wine on the menu priced at $76 or under is offered at half price — a weekly ritual that draws regulars and wine curious diners alike.
The indoor dining room holds just 14 tables, keeping the atmosphere intimate and the service attentive. A covered pergola patio extends the experience outdoors, open seasonally with the full food menu. For something more relaxed, Betsy's Garden — an open-air Airstream bar — serves cocktails, nosh, and desserts on a first-come basis, no reservation required. The bar inside operates the same way: full service, full menu, always walk-in.
1776 does not participate in third-party delivery. Dishes are composed as intended and substitutions are not offered, though genuine dietary needs and allergies are taken seriously and accommodated with care. It is a fine dining American restaurant that holds its standards firmly without holding its guests at arm's length — refined enough to earn national recognition, approachable enough that the bar stool is always open.
