The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Pittsburgh Staple with a California Spirit

Founded in 2010 by Pat McDonnell and Nick Koustis, Juniper Grill was built on a straightforward idea: affordable, quality American cuisine with a fresh Californian sensibility. What started as a single Peters Township location has grown into six across the Pittsburgh region and beyond, with the Cranberry Township address on MacKenzie Way among the most established. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — recognition reserved for restaurants with thoughtfully curated wine programs — speaks to the care that goes into every aspect of the experience here, not just the food.

The Food and Drink

Every dish is prepared from scratch using what the kitchen describes as "the best and freshest ingredients available." The menu covers considerable ground without losing focus. Starters lean into bold, layered flavors: the Ahi Tuna Wonton arrives with fresh mango purée, avocado, and chipotle drizzle, while the Brisket Quesadilla layers slow-smoked BBQ brisket with jalapeño and caramelized onion. The "Cali Fresh" section — grilled fish tacos, honey chipotle shrimp tacos, a customizable Santa Fe Bowl with quinoa and avocado — is where the Californian influence is most direct.

Center-of-the-plate options range from Wood Grilled Salmon and Chilean Sea Bass with horseradish crust and wasabi glaze, to a Slow Roasted Short Rib and a Smokehouse Platter featuring slow-smoked baby back ribs, brisket, and smoked sausage. The California Burger, stacked with local bacon, Monterey Jack, and guacamole on brioche, is a handheld worth noting.

The drinks program matches the kitchen's ambition. The wine list runs to 50 bottles and over 30 by the glass — the foundation of that Wine Spectator recognition. Cocktails skew creative and ingredient-forward: fresh-squeezed margaritas, a Barrel-Aged Manhattan built on Knob Creek Single Barrel and Carpano Classico Vermouth, and a Mango Habanero Whiskey Sour with egg white. Sipping tequilas and craft beers round out a list that takes its libations seriously.

Values and Atmosphere

Juniper Grill was built, in the founders' own words, on "a commitment to strong core values" — specifically a framework they call Theory R, centered on bringing "love, dignity and respect" to guests and employees alike. The atmosphere aims for cozy and modern in equal measure, with outdoor seating, private dining rooms, and full catering services making it as suited to a relaxed weekday lunch as to a private event. For a multi-location group, it maintains a consistency that feels considered rather than corporate.
