Barcelona Restaurant and Bar

Established in 1996 in Columbus's German Village, Barcelona brings authentic Spanish and Catalan cuisine, a Wine Spectator-awarded list, and warm hospitality to every table.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Since 1996, Barcelona Restaurant and Bar has been bringing the flavors of the Iberian Peninsula to Columbus's historic German Village neighborhood. The restaurant's own ethos says it plainly: creating memorable experiences by making your family our family through food and hospitality. That straightforward warmth, sustained for nearly three decades, is what sets this place apart.

A Sense of Place

The setting draws its inspiration from seaside sangria and a walk on the Ramblas — a fusion, as Barcelona describes it, of "metropolitan chic and Old World European charm." The dining room features tiled walls and murals, a front bar, a patio with a fountain, and a back corner wine area that together create an atmosphere comfortable enough for a weekday lunch and special enough for a proper dinner out.

The Food

Spanish and Catalan cooking is the kitchen's north star. The signature Paella Barcelona — chicken, chorizo, shrimp, squid, clams, mussels, sofrito, piquillo peppers, peas, and calasparra rice — is the dish the restaurant returns to again and again, and for good reason. It anchors the popular "Cooking with Chef Ruben" dinner-and-demo evenings, which regularly sell out. Those events open with cider-braised chorizo and close with Tarta de Santiago, a traditional Spanish almond cake, each course matched to a carefully chosen Iberian wine. A vegetarian paella — Paella Verde with green sofrito, beans, mushrooms, and calasparra rice — shows the kitchen's range beyond meat and seafood.

The Wine

Barcelona's commitment to the glass earned it a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, recognition that reflects genuine depth of selection rather than a token list. Spanish bottles dominate — Albariño from Rías Baixas, Rioja Reserva, Campo de Borja rosé, Bierzo Godello — and the team has demonstrated enough confidence in their wine program to host virtual and in-person tastings exploring Portugal, Italy, and beyond, in partnership with specialist importers.

Beyond Dinner

Midweek live music on Wednesdays, a happy hour Tuesday through Saturday, and a calendar of community events — including charity "Dine to Donate" evenings — make Barcelona a consistent part of German Village life rather than a destination reserved for occasions. The kitchen also accommodates takeaway and delivery, and the space handles private parties and catering. For a restaurant rooted in Catalan and Spanish tradition, it has found a thoroughly Columbus way of belonging.
