The story
Sitting at 2 West Main Street in Clinton, New Jersey, The Clinton House carries its name with purpose. The building itself is historic, and the restaurant leans into that character — offering a dining experience that feels substantial without being stiff.
The menu is rooted in classic American steakhouse territory, but it reaches further. All steaks are USDA Certified Black Angus, all-natural and grass-fed — a standard the kitchen holds across cuts. The Filet Mignon arrives topped with sautéed mushrooms and au jus; the Blue Ribbon Steak is a 22 oz strip finished with onion rings; the Grilled Ribeye is a 16 oz bone-in cut with balsamic glaze and pickled red onion. For something more elaborate, the Beef Wellington — filet cooked medium rare, wrapped in phyllo dough with chicken liver pâté and mushroom duxelles, finished with demi-glace — stands as a signature of the kitchen's ambition.
Seafood holds its own alongside the beef program. Twin 5 oz South African lobster tails, jumbo lump crab cakes with bell pepper, pan-seared Canadian salmon with lemon cream sauce, and a shrimp cocktail of wild white shrimp are all present on the menu. Starters like Clams Casino, Lobster Bisque, and a Charcuterie & Fromage Board sourced from Murray's Cheese in New York round out the opening courses.
Wine Spectator awarded The Clinton House its Award of Excellence — recognition that reflects a wine list with genuine range. Bottles span Napa Valley Cabernets from Cakebread and Jordan, Oregon Pinot Noirs from Adelsheim and Purple Hands, Italian selections from Barolo to Chianti Classico, and Champagnes including Dom Pérignon and Taittinger. It is a list built to match the ambition of the food.
The Clinton House functions as a full-service destination. A bar menu with happy hour, tasting events, private event hosting, and online ordering extend its reach well beyond the dining room. The bar stays open an hour past the dining room each evening, making it a natural stop before or after a meal.
