The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Wilderness Lodge with Deep Roots

Gateway Lodge has welcomed guests to the rough and tumble hills of the Pennsylvania Wilds since 1934. Passed from one family to another across the decades, it has held to a consistent belief: that together is better and simple is best. Today the lodge sits at the edge of Cook Forest State Park, about two hours from Pittsburgh, where old-growth white pines and eastern hemlocks frame every view. National Geographic Traveller, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The Independent have all taken note of what makes this place worth the drive.

Forest-to-Table American Cuisine

The kitchen team calls itself "Wild Crafters," and the name is deliberate. Every dish is built from scratch using seasonal, organic ingredients sourced from local foragers and sustainable farms. The food is honest American cooking — comforting, regionally grounded, and attentive to dietary needs, with many offerings naturally gluten-free.

Wednesday through Friday evenings bring Wild Crafter's Kitchen, a casual farm-to-table menu served from 5 to 8 pm. Saturday evenings shift into Taste of the Wilds, a three-course preset dinner whose menu changes with the seasons to reflect whatever is freshest. Both services pair naturally with curated wines, craft beers, and occasional live music in the intimate log cabin dining room.

The wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, recognition that speaks to the care taken in building a cellar that complements the kitchen's seasonal approach. Packages like the 3-Night Farm-to-Table stay — which includes dinner vouchers and a Saturday Taste of the Wilds dinner — show how fully the dining experience is woven into the lodge's identity.

The Setting

Rooms range from fireside jetted-tub suites to Heritage Cabins tucked beneath century-old hemlocks, each with its own outdoor fire ring. Guests wake to breakfast delivered to their door. The forest is immediately outside — hiking trails, the Clarion River, and scenic overlooks of the Allegheny National Forest are all within reach. It is the kind of place where the landscape and the table reinforce each other, and where the American tradition of gathering around good food in wild country feels entirely natural.
