The story
Walk through the blue door on Erie Avenue and you arrive at Al-Posto — which translates simply as "at the spot." Situated in Cincinnati's Hyde Park Square, this Southern Italian restaurant and wine bar has a clear sense of identity: warm, unhurried, and grounded in a specific place and a specific family.
That family is the one behind Nonna Flora. Her recipes from Bari, in the Puglia region of southern Italy, form the backbone of the menu, and her name appears on more than one dish. It's the kind of origin story that gives a room its character before you've even looked at the menu.
The Italian cooking here moves confidently between tradition and refinement. Antipasti include Nonna's Meatballs — beef and pork ragù with Parmigiano Reggiano — alongside Burrata with housemade focaccia and a balsamic mostarda, and crisp Arancini with pomodoro and basil.
Pasta is where the kitchen's southern Italian roots show most clearly. Orecchiette Barese arrives with broccolini, 'nduja, fennel sausage, and Pecorino Toscano — a direct nod to Puglia. Linguine alla Flora, named for Nonna herself, is a lemon cream pasta with basil and Parmigiano Reggiano. For something more theatrical, the Cacio for Two is finished tableside inside a Parmigiano wheel. The Short Rib Lasagna, layered with prosciutto and short rib bolognese, buffalo mozzarella, and aged provolone, anchors the heartier end of the menu.
Secondi span land and sea: Branzino with gremolata and capers, Garlic Shrimp Diavolo with Calabrian chili, a half heritage-breed chicken Piccata, and a 22-oz porterhouse Bistecca alla Griglia for the table.
The drinks program earned Al-Posto a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024 — recognition that reflects a genuinely considered list. Italian bottles anchor the wine selection, with Pugliese whites, Sardinian Vermentino, Chianti Classico, and Piedmontese Nebbiolo alongside options from Oregon and California. Cocktails lean Italian-American: an Aperol Spritz, a Classic Negroni, an Espresso Martini, and the house "Capri" made with local Northside vodka and limoncello.
The dining room has a vault door leading to a private seating area — one of those details that makes a space memorable. There's also a front patio and a back patio bar, giving the restaurant different registers depending on the occasion. Al-Posto handles private parties, rehearsal dinners, and corporate events, and a "Family Dinner Club" newsletter keeps regulars in the loop.
For straightforward, ingredient-led Italian food with a strong sense of where it comes from, Al-Posto earns its place on the map.
